Kezan — Pollution, Profit, and Rise of the Goblins

Thinking of a traditional fantasy starting zone in World of Warcraft or any other fantasy game, it is usually depicted as peaceful forests, quiet snowy valleys, or ancient, sunlit ruins. Kezan is a different story altogether.

When you start a goblin character, you are dropped into a polluted, neon-lit, exhaust-choked industrial metropolis where there is only one rule, “Time is money, friend.” The island of Kezan is the absolute beating heart of goblin culture, a chaotic paradise built entirely on greed, explosions, and questionable engineering.

The Kaja’mite Miracle, From Slaves to Masterminds

Goblins weren’t always the hyper-intelligent, fast-talking trade princes we know today. Long ago, goblins were a primitive, unintelligent race enslaved by the Zandalari Trolls. The trolls forced them to work deep inside the volcanic Mount Kajaro, mining a strange, glowing green mineral called Kaja’mite.

However, the trolls made a massive miscalculation. Prolonged exposure to Kaja’mite dust began to mutate the goblins. It rapidly expanded their brains, granting them extraordinary, albeit chaotic, intelligence and a knack for engineering. Using their newfound brilliance, the goblins secretly built weapons, explosives, and technology right under their masters’ noses. They eventually launched a devastating rebellion, overthrew the Zandalari, and claimed Kezan for themselves.

The Geography of Kezan, Greed Island

Kezan is a brilliant piece of adult environmental storytelling. Unlike the heroic narratives of other races, Kezan is a dark, satirical take on extreme capitalism. The adult themes here are about rampant corporate greed, organized crime, and literal addiction. The streets are run by mobsters who will break your kneecaps for a few coins, environmental regulations are non-existent, and the entire society is fueled by Kaja’Cola (made from the intelligence-boosting Kaja’mite), a highly addictive, radioactive beverage that the population is basically forced to consume just to stay smart. It is a hilarious but grim mirror of corporate exploitation.

The island on the other hand is completely dominated by the towering Mount Kajaro, a massive, active volcano. Instead of fearing nature, goblins choose to pave over it. The surface of Kezan is a sprawling network of highways, refineries, and slums. It is lit by neon signs advertising “Kaja’Cola” and choked by thick green smog. Below the surface lies Undermine, the legendary, multi-tiered subterranean capital of the Trade Cartels. It is a society where your worth is entirely measured by the size of your bank account, and safety regulations are considered a myth.

The Cataclysm and the Bilgewater Cartel

For years, the various Goblin Cartels remained neutral, selling weapons and supplies to both the Horde and the Alliance for maximum profit. But this comfortable isolation was shattered during the Cataclysm.

When Deathwing returned to Azeroth, the sheer force of his emergence caused Mount Kajaro to erupt. As Kezan was torn apart by lava and earthquakes, the leader of the Bilgewater Cartel, Trade Prince Jastor Gallywix, saw an opportunity. He offered his panicked people a spot on his escape yacht, but only if they signed over their life savings and agreed to become his slaves.

A Shipwreck and Joining the Horde

The escape didn’t go as planned. Caught in the crossfire of an Alliance fleet attacking a Horde ship, Gallywix’s yacht was destroyed, washing the survivors onto the shores of the Lost Isles.

It was here that the goblins’ destiny changed forever. They stumbled upon Thrall, the former Warchief of the Horde, who had been captured by the Alliance. Using their explosive ingenuity, the goblins helped Thrall escape and fought alongside the Horde forces to survive the island. Recognizing their technological brilliance and resourcefulness, Thrall offered the Bilgewater Cartel a place within the Horde. They traded their sinking island for a new home in the slums of Orgrimmar and Azshara, permanently altering the technological balance of Azeroth.

Personal Thoughts on Kezan

Nothing else in the game compares to the sheer absurdity of the goblin introduction. It is a massive difference from gathering herbs or slaying boars from generic starting areas. You are driving a customized hotrod down a highway, throwing a massive pool party, playing a violent game of “footbomb,” and dealing with mobsters while a volcano literally explodes in the background. It is fast, funny, and perfectly encapsulates the sharp, commercial, and explosive mindset of the goblins. Kezan might be lost to the lava, but the memories of that neon-lit chaos will always remain.
