Grommash Hellscream — Warsong’s Howl and Demon’s Blood

There is an epic and legendary warrior among the Orcs. He is the leader of the Warsong clan and father to Garrosh. He is Grommash Hellscream and is one of the most iconic characters in World of Warcraft. He may sometimes feel like a secondary character (especially to new generation of players) compared to Warchief Thrall or his own son, but that’s wrong. He never sat on a massive iron throne, nor saw the future of the Horde. But he is the saviour of all Orcs. Looking closely at the lore, Grom is arguably the single most pivotal figure in the history of the Orcish race.

We can describe him as the omega of the Orcs’ darkest chapter. He was the one who damned his entire race to demonic slavery, and years later, he was the one who gave his life to break that very same curse. This dude here is badassery shaped.

Grommash Hellscream

The First to Drink Mannoroth’s Blood

Long before the Orcs crossed the Dark Portal, Grommash was the fearless chieftain of the Warsong Clan on Draenor. He was a terrifying warrior, known for his deafening battle cries and his legendary axe, Gorehowl. Grom’s fatal flaw was an insatiable thirst for power and a deep pride in his clan’s strength.

The warlock Gul’dan exploited this weakness perfectly. When Gul’dan offered the Orcish chieftains a chalice filled with the glowing green blood of the Pit Lord Mannoroth, a lieutenant of the Burning Legion, promising them unimaginable power, many hesitated. Grom didn’t even think twice about this offer. Grommash Hellscream was the very first Orc to step forward and drink the demon blood. This single, arrogant act bound the Orcs to the Legion, turning their brown skin to a sickly green and transforming a shamanic, noble people into a bloodthirsty, mindless Horde, but granting them immense boost in power.

Grommash Ventures to Azeroth and Finds a Brother

After the Horde invaded Azeroth through the Dark Portal and won the first war, but they decisively lost the Second War. The remaining Orcs were either killed or put into Alliance internment camps. Grom and his Warsong clan managed to evade capture, hiding in the wilderness of Lordaeron for years. They lived like hunted animals, constantly fighting off the lingering lethargy of the demon blood wearing off.

It was during this period that Grom met a young, inexperienced gladiator named Thrall. Thrall had escaped his human captors but knew nothing of his own people’s culture. Grom took the young Shaman under his wing, teaching him the old ways, the true language of the Orcs, and what it meant to have honor. Despite their massive differences, Grom being a remnant of the old, savage ways and Thrall representing a peaceful future, they formed an unbreakable bond, becoming brothers in arms.

Grom and Thrall

The Ashenvale Campaign, Slaying a God

Years later, Thrall led the newly formed Horde across the sea to the continent of Kalimdor. Knowing Grom’s hot-headed nature, Thrall ordered him to stay behind in the forests of Ashenvale to simply gather lumber and build a settlement, keeping him out of major conflicts.

However, cutting down the sacred trees of Ashenvale quickly angered the local Night Elves and their demi-god protector, Cenarius. The Warsong clan found themselves completely outmatched by the ancient magic of Cenarius, who seemed practically invulnerable. Facing total annihilation, Grom grew desperate.

Sensing this desperation, the demon Mannoroth corrupted a local fountain with his blood. Grom found the fountain, and despite knowing the horrors it brought the first time, he gave in to his pride and desperation. He and his clan drank the demon blood for a second time, transforming into brutal, chaotic fel-orcs with red skin and demonic spikes growing from their bodies. Empowered by the demonic rage, Grom charged into battle and did the impossible, he slaughtered the demi-god Cenarius.

Grommash’s Ultimate Sacrifice in Demon Fall Canyon

When Thrall discovered what Grom had done, he was heartbroken. With the help of Jaina Proudmoore’s magic, Thrall captured Grom and purged the blinding demonic rage from his mind. Once Grom realized that he had sold his people to the Burning Legion yet again, his immense pride was replaced by a cold, determined fury.

Together, Thrall and Grom traveled to Demon Fall Canyon to confront their true master, Mannoroth. During the epic battle, Thrall was easily knocked aside by the massive Pit Lord. It all came down to Grom. With a legendary, deafening roar, Grommash charged through the demon’s hellfire, leaping into the air, and buried Gorehowl deep into Mannoroth’s chest.

The ensuing demonic explosion killed the Pit Lord, but it also mortally wounded Grom. As he lay dying, the demonic red fire faded from his eyes. He looked at Thrall and said his final words: “The blood haze has lifted. The demon’s fire has burnt out in my veins. I… have freed myself.” To which Thrall replied, “No, old friend. You’ve freed us all.” To this day, I still sometimes watch this cinematic, and my eyes tear up every single time… This was the golden days of Warcraft.

To honor his fallen brother’s ultimate sacrifice, Thrall named the central fortress of the newly built Orgrimmar ”Grommash Hold”, ensuring that every future Warchief would rule under the legacy of Hellscream.

Personal Thoughts on Grommash Hellscream, Times Change

Grom Hellscream was a flawed, arrogant, and aggressive warlord, but his character arc is a masterpiece of storytelling. He caused the greatest tragedy in Orc history, but he paid for it with his life to ensure his people would never be slaves again. He is easily one of my favorite Orc characters.

This makes his appearance in the Warlords of Draenor cinematic so incredibly impactful. When a time-traveling Garrosh stops Grom from drinking the blood in an alternate timeline, tossing the chalice away and declaring “Times change” to Gul’dan, it is a beautiful, poetic reversal of fate. The son, despite all his own failures, managed to save his father from making the biggest mistake in Warcraft history. I still remember watching it live on the internet, I was like “Wow, what a time to be alive.” Only if the expansion itself was good. It started off epic but ended in misery. Lots of missed opportunity if you ask me.
