Queen Azshara — The Light of Lights

Queen Azshara was practically a living goddess worshipped by the Highborne. She was one of the most powerful mages to have ever lived, but at the same time one of the most arrogant and narcissistic figures in World of Warcraft universe. Her story is of absolute power, blinding despotism, and a dark bargain that forever mutated the face of Azeroth. From the golden age of the Night Elf empire to the abyssal depths of Nazjatar, Azshara’s biography is a testament to how far someone will go just to remain on top.

The Beloved Queen of the Highborne

Long before the Horde or the Alliance existed, the Night Elves ruled a massive, undivided Azeroth. At the center of this magnificent empire was Queen Azshara. She possessed unearthly beauty and unparalleled magical prowess. She was so universally loved by her people that they renamed their capital city to Zin-Azshari (The Glory of Azshara).

She surrounded herself with Highborne sycophants, an elite caste of noble spellcasters, and built a lavish palace on the shores of the Well of Eternity. However, Azshara’s defining flaw was her boundless arrogance. She believed her people were superior to all others, and ultimately, she believed that only a god was fit to be her equal.

Mating Call of Queen Azshara, Sargeras’ Arrival

Azshara’s reckless and obsessive experiments with the Well of Eternity attracted the attention of Sargeras, the dark titan and creator of the Burning Legion. When Sargeras contacted her, Azshara was mesmerized by his raw power. Convinced that the titan was a suitable mate for her, she willingly opened portals within her palace to allow the demonic Legion to enter Azeroth.

This massive betrayal sparked the War of the Ancients. Despite the resistance from legendary heroes like Malfurion Stormrage and Illidan, the war culminated in the destabilization of the Well of Eternity. The resulting explosion, known as the Great Sundering, shattered the single continent of Azeroth into pieces and sent Azshara’s glorious capital plunging into the raging ocean.

Queen Azshara’s Bargain With N’zoth

As the ocean water flooded her throne room and drowned her loyal Highborne, Azshara could not bring herself to accept defeat. In her final moments of desperation, she heard the whispers of an ancient, malevolent entity from the deep, the Old God, N’Zoth.

N’Zoth offered her a bargain: he would save her and her followers from drowning, but they would have to serve him. Still struggling and desperate for power, Azshara accepted. The Old God’s dark magic twisted the dying elves into the serpentine, amphibious horrors known as the Naga. Even in her monstrous new form, Azshara retained her crown, ruling over the deep sea empire of Nazjatar for ten thousand years, slowly building her strength in the shadows.

Rising Tide of Azshara

After ten thousand years of silence, Azshara began to intermittently remind the world that she was still the true ruler of the seas. Even though named after her, she does not make an appearance in Azshara zone. She appears briefly in Darkshore, confronting Malfurion Stormrage to distract him from Mount Hyjal in Catacylsm expansion. Her presence became even more threatening during the Legion expansion. In Azsuna, she appeared as a colossal magical projection to torment her former advisor, Prince Farondis, proving that her spite had not faded over millennia.

She exerted her influence through her elite Naga forces in the Eye of Azshara dungeon, where they fought to secure the Tidestone of Golganneth. Although adventurers successfully reclaimed the relic to use in the Tomb of Sargeras, Azshara was simply playing the long game. She waited for the heroes to leave the temple unguarded after the war, allowing her forces to secretly steal the Tidestone back. This calculated theft provided her with the perfect weapon to part the seas for when she decided to reveal Nazjatar once again.

Emerging of Nazjatar and Betraying a God

Azshara finally stepped back into the global spotlight during the Battle for Azeroth expansion. Using the stolen Titan relic, the Tidestone of Golganneth, she orchestrated a master plan that parted the ocean and lured the fleets of both the Alliance and the Horde into a trap, crashing them into the suddenly exposed seafloor of Nazjatar.

Azshara is loyal to no one but herself. While she appeared to be fulfilling her ancient pact to free N’Zoth from his prison, her true intention was to manipulate the Old God and siphon his power. Players eventually confronted her in the Eternal Palace raid, putting an end to her reign at last. Although she was defeated, she succeeded in breaking N’Zoth’s chains, and then vanished into the shadows (possibly pulled by N’zoth). Her current whereabouts remain a mystery, but the “Light of Lights” could be plotting her return to supremacy.

Personal Thoughts on Queen Azshara

Arriving at the mesmerizing yet suffocating depths of Nazjatar under Azshara’s shadow was a unique experience. I was maining a rogue at the time and Nazjatar was an absolute paradise for ambushes and World PvP. The verticality of the map, the caves and the world boss turned the zone into a massive hunting ground.

Skirmishes between the Alliance and the Horde, where one side would eventually push the other all the way back to their base, adding a nice layer of flavor to the zone. Though it wasn’t rewarding much, still great for farming PvP resources for the quests. While the agonizing grind for the Snapback Scuttler crab mount made me want to pull my hair out, I eventually gave up upon it. Azshara might have tried to drown us, but the intense World PvP we had and the sheer beauty of Nazjatar still remains in the back of my head.

Even though Queen Azshara is completely borderline crazy, one can’t deny her beauty and her rather ”popular” presence on the internet. I don’t really see her as a likeable character, but her actions put a massive strain on the world. Ultimately, we can say she is one of the foundational figures who shaped Azeroth into the world we know and love today.
