He is portrayed as a villain in the game. A savage butcher who wanted to reclaim what was his and expand upon it. To his people, he was a hero. Zul’jin was a Warlord and also a symbol of defiance. He united the scattered Amani tribes with pure will and charisma. He kinda reminds me of DIO from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Dude has that devilish charm. If we want to summarize his purpose and what had happened; Thousands of years ago, Dath’Remar Sunstrider and his High Elves invaded Amani forests. They built their kingdom, Quel’Thalas, directly on top of Troll lands. His rightful home was taken from his ancestors, and he simply wanted them back. Pretty fair if you ask me.

The Second War, Orgrim’s Promise
Zul’jin was a pragmatist. He didn’t like Orcs and didn’t trust outsiders. When the Orcish Horde arrived during the Second War, an opportunity presented itself. Warchief Orgrim Doomhammer made him a promise, ‘In return for your people’s help, we will help you demolish the High Elves of Silvermoon and the descendant of the Sunstrider dynasty, Anasterian Sunstrider.’ For the first time in millennia, the Trolls had received a powerful ally. Zul’jin fought with savage fury, his axe claiming countless Elven lives. He was a legend on the battlefield and among his people.
Prisoner of the Elves
Near the end of the war, the tides had turned. The Horde was pushed back, and Zul’jin was captured. He was taken prisoner by his most hated enemies, The High Elves. For days, the Rangers tortured him in hopes of breaking him. They wanted to humiliate Zul’jin. They beat him, burned him, and in a final act of cruelty, they gouged out his right eye. They wanted him to live the rest of his life scarred, a reminder of Elven superiority. Their mistake was underestimating Zul’jin’s rage.

An Arm for Freedom
Chained to a pillar, surrounded by enemies, Zul’jin did the plot of 127 Hours on himself. During a small raid by his fellow trolls to save him, a chance at freedom presented itself. But he was shackled, and the chains wouldn’t break. So, he grabbed a discarded spear and cut off his own arm. (Similar to Kargath Bladefist, who also severed his hand from shackles with a stone.) He severed his own limb not out of madness, but out of pure, calculated will to be free. He escaped into the forests, bleeding, one-eyed, and one-armed. He was alive and hateful, more than ever.

Betrayal of the Horde
After his escape, Zul’jin spent years in the shadows, rebuilding his army, healing his wounds (what was left of them). He waited for the Horde to return. He believed that Doomhammer’s legacy would honor their pact. With the Burning Crusade expansion, The Horde did return, but under a new Warchief called Thrall.
Orgrim was slain in battle, but the new and young warchief who replaced him allied with the Elves instead of helping Zul’jin retake Quel’Thalas. Thrall did not honor the pact made by Orgrim. Now called the Blood Elves, the very people who tortured him, who took his eye, who stole his land, were now wearing the Horde crest. They did my boy really dirty. The people you bled for are now shaking hands with your torturers. As you can expect, Zul’jin grew even more hateful and snapped. He hated everyone now. “I spit on da Horde!” This was justified. He was slain by adventurers in Zul’Aman mini-raid after this.
Personal Thoughts on Zul’jin
I think Zul’jin did nothing wrong. From his perspective, he is the protagonist of a rightful cause, but this is war. He lost his home and fought to take it back. Who wouldn’t have done the same? He sacrificed his arm, trusted his allies, and in the end, he was betrayed and slain for some good loot.
It is tragic that Trolls in Warcraft are always destined to lose their leaders. Zul’jin was betrayed by the Horde. Vol’jin was betrayed by bad writing (dying to a random trash mob). King Rastakhan was betrayed by his own council. Zul’jin was the last true Chieftain of Amani. No politics, no redemption, no random stuff. He just wanted his land back. I respect that. Him looking really slick and cool doesn’t hurt.
In Warcraft III, when you controlled a Troll Headhunter, one of their voice lines was explicitly, “Vengeance for Zul’jin!” Even the Darkspear Trolls who joined the Horde shouted his name as a battle cry. The Trolls never forgot him. Rest in power, Warlord. Taz’dingo!
