Nestled deep beneath the frozen surface of Northrend lies the kingdom of Azjol-Nerub, an ancient and once mighty empire of the Nerubian race. Known for their sophisticated culture and eerie architectural feats, the Nerubians have long held dominion over the subterranean tunnels of the frozen north.
Azjol-Nerub, however, was not always theirs alone. Over the centuries, the kingdom grew from humble beginnings to a powerful civilization that spanned vast, underground halls. Today, it stands as a testament to both the resilience and the tragedy of its people, as well as a key player in the ever-unfolding conflict between life and death in Northrend.

The Origins of Azjol-Nerub
Azjol-Nerub’s history is one marked by conquest and adaptation. Long before the rise of the Lich King, the Nerubians were a splintered race, originally part of the aqir empire. Fleeing the collapse of their homeland in the south, a faction of the aqir sought refuge in the icy recesses of Northrend, overthrowing the native tol’vir and usurping their architecture for their own uses. In time, the Nerubians, now calling themselves the Azjol-Nerub, established their kingdom in the frozen depths of the land.
The kingdom flourished for millennia, becoming a center of cultural and technological achievement. It was not long before the once united empire of Azj’Aqir was divided into three distinct nations: Azjol-Nerub to the north, Ahn’Qiraj to the southwest, and Manti’vess in the far south. While the other two regions faded into the annals of history, Azjol-Nerub thrived. The Nerubians constructed sprawling cities beneath the ice, vast caverns and tunnels interwoven with silken webs, their inhabitants living in harmony with the subterranean world. For a time, it seemed their reign would be eternal.

The War of the Spider
With the coming of the Burning Legion and the creation of the Lich King, Azjol-Nerub’s fate was sealed. The Lich King, recognizing the potential threat posed by the Nerubians, struck swiftly. The kingdom, despite its formidable defenses, was ill-prepared for the assault of the Scourge. The Nerubians, while fierce in their own right, found themselves outnumbered and outmatched. The War of the Spider, as it came to be known, was long and brutal. Though the Nerubians fought valiantly, their numbers could not stand against the tide of death that surged from the Frozen Throne.
The Scourge was relentless, feeding on its own ranks as the fallen Nerubians were raised into twisted new forms: crypt fiends, death knights, and other horrific creatures of undeath. The once-proud kingdom fell into ruin as the dead poured through its tunnels, decimating the population. In the end, Azjol-Nerub was all but wiped from existence. The surviving Nerubians were turned into mindless slaves to the will of the Lich King, their civilization reduced to little more than a memory.

Azjol-Nerub in the Shadow of the Frozen Throne
Even after the kingdom’s fall, remnants of Azjol-Nerub persisted. As the Lich King’s power grew, his will shaped the ruins of the Nerubian homeland into a twisted domain. Arthas Menethil, guided by the Lich King’s command, made his way through the abandoned halls of Azjol-Nerub on his journey to the Frozen Throne. Alongside the ancient Nerubian king, Anub’arak, Arthas traversed the Upper and Lower Kingdoms of Azjol-Nerub, battling dwarves, still-living Nerubians, and the haunting remnants of a once-great civilization.
The ruins of Azjol-Nerub were, and still are, home to untold treasures: gems, magic items, ancient tomes, and artifacts that have remained untouched by time or the Scourge. While the kingdom’s halls now echo with the sound of death and decay, some treasures have endured, lying undisturbed beneath the ice. It is said that many of Azjol-Nerub’s greatest cultural achievements, its art, literature, and magical knowledge, still rest within its forgotten chambers, waiting for a future that may never come.

The Struggle for Survival
Though Azjol-Nerub was shattered by the Scourge, not all of the Nerubians were lost. In the years following the War of the Spider, pockets of surviving Nerubians continued to resist the Lich King’s forces. In the Upper Kingdom, the undead Nerubians patrol their homeland, guarding the clutches of eggs that will one day spawn a new generation of warriors for the Scourge. Meanwhile, deep in the Old Kingdom lies a darker presence: the faceless ones. Little is known about these strange and terrifying creatures, but they are believed to serve a power far more ancient and malevolent than the Lich King himself.
These surviving Nerubians, led by Kilix the Unraveler, continue to mount sporadic attacks against the Scourge forces, fighting to reclaim their homeland. However, the threat of the faceless ones looms large, and their presence adds another layer of uncertainty to the kingdom’s already fragile future. The faceless ones, shrouded in mystery, remain a source of dread and speculation, their goals and motivations unclear but undeniably sinister. It is said that their power may be tied to the very foundation of Northrend itself.
During the war against the Lich King, adventurers ventured into the heart of Azjol-Nerub to confront Anub’arak and his forces. After a fierce battle, the mighty king was slain, and his broken body was brought before the remaining Nerubians as proof of his death. Yet even in death, Anub’arak’s influence lingered, as the surviving Nerubians continued to resist the encroaching Scourge and seek vengeance for the fall of their kingdom.

The Rebirth of Azjol-Nerub
With the defeat of the Lich King and the crumbling of the Scourge, Azjol-Nerub found itself in a position to rebuild. In the wake of the Cataclysm, it was revealed that the Nerubians had hidden away a vast stockpile of eggs, safe from the ravages of the Scourge and the faceless ones. Under the leadership of Seer Ixit, the Nerubians began to repopulate their kingdom, slowly but surely reviving their race and their culture. However, the scars of war remain, and the path to recovery is a difficult one.
Though much of Azjol-Nerub is still considered a ruin, whispers persist of buildings that still stand amidst the rubble. The Bronzebeard brothers, during their travels through the region, reported encountering the last of the living Nerubians, few in number but strong in spirit. Some of these surviving Nerubians, known as the Azjol-anak, remain in hiding, waiting for the right moment to return to their ancestral lands and rebuild their shattered civilization.
In the aftermath of the war against the Jailer, it is clear that Azjol-Nerub’s place in the world is far from over. Its ancient halls may have crumbled, but the spirit of the Nerubian people endures. As the Scourge no longer dominates Northrend and the threat of the faceless ones wanes, Azjol-Nerub may once again rise from the depths and reclaim its rightful place in the history of Azeroth.

Personal Thoughts on Azjol-Nerub
Though Azjol-Nerub’s once-great empire lies in ruins, its legacy endures beneath the ice and stone of Northrend. This race of bug-like beings, though scarred by the wars they’ve fought and the enemies they’ve lost, remain a resilient people. With the fall of the Scourge and the retreat of the faceless ones, a slow but steady process of rebirth has begun. The kingdom may never return to its former glory, but the heart of Azjol-Nerub beats once more, echoing in the depths of the world. And as adventurers continue to explore the forgotten caverns, whispers of new discoveries surface. The treasures of an ancient civilization, the knowledge of scholars long passed, and the hope for a future where the Nerubians thrive again all lie hidden beneath the ice. In time, Azjol-Nerub may rise once more, not as a mere shadow of its former self, but as a powerful force in the ongoing story of Azeroth.
